West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed her desire for a Punjabi language centre to be set up in Kolkata, Punjabi University vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh said here today.
Speaking at the valedictory function of the 6th All-India Punjabi Conference, Singh said Mamata had told him that she wanted help from the Punjab government or the Punjabi University to set up the centre in Kolkata, which could be named after the first Sikh Guru, Nanak Dev.
The university has assured her every help in academic matters, including arranging seminars and supply of books for the proposed bhawan, he said.
"Mamata has granted Punjabi (Gurmukhi) the status of a second language in West Bengal schools after coming to power," Singh added.
