Qatar Airways begins freighter service from Delhi

Gulf carrier Qatar Airways has begun a weekly freighter service from here to Doha to fly cargo, including electronic goods and pharma products, to global destinations.
"After the launch of our service to Hyderabad in April, we are delighted to start our scheduled freighter service to Delhi this month. Delhi has one of India's largest and fastest growing retail industries (and)....Is an important commercial capital in Asia," the cargo carrier's CEO Ulrich Ogiermann said in a statement here.
The first Qatar Airways Cargo flight, an Airbus A330 freighter, landed in Delhi yesterday and left with several tonnes of goods.
The cargo carrier would operate the weekly service between Doha and Delhi alongside the two daily passenger flights Qatar Airways already operates. Qatar Airways Cargo fleet currently includes three Airbus A-330F and five Boeing B-777 freighters, which fly to over 40 destinations worldwide.
Welcoming the cargo airline to IGI Airport, Delhi International Airport CEO I Prabhakara Rao said DIAL had taken several steps to boost cargo traffic which led to an 11 per cent growth in tonnage and helped the airport cross the 600,000 tonne mark in 2013-14.
Qatar Airways Cargo is eyeing major industrial sectors in Delhi, like health, electric and electronic goods, gems and jewellery, textiles and leather, factory machinery, consumer goods and metallurgy. Pharmaceutical products would be a major export from here, a spokesperson said.
