R-Day celebrations in MP: Guv lists agri-sector achievements

Riding high on agriculture, Madhya Pradesh has "possibly" registered the highest growth rate in the sector globally which continues to stand at more than 20 per cent since the last four years, Governor Ram Naresh Yadav said here today.
"Since last four years Madhya Pradesh's average agriculture growth rate continues to stand at more than 20 per cent which is possibly highest in the world," Yadav said addressing the 67th Republic Day function at Lal Parade Ground here.
"The state is getting Krishi Karman award from the Centre for the highest agriculture growth rate since last four years," the Governor said lauding the efforts made in the sector despite "challenges".
He also informed on the occasion that the state is distributing a relief amount of Rs 4,600 crore to farmers whose crops suffered damage due to natural calamities to show the government's commitment to farmers' welfare.
Referring to irrigation sector, the Governor said that in the last decade the state's irrigation potential has increased from 7.5 lakh hectare to 36 lakh hectare and it has set a target of taking it to 40 lakh hectare by 2018.
Highlighting state's overall growth rate, he said that MP's growth rate continues to remain at double digit and its gross domestic product which was at Rs one lakh crore about 10 years back, now stands at Rs 5 lakh crore.
The per capita income too has increased from Rs 15,000 to Rs 60,000 per year, he added.

On the energy sector, the Governor said that the state has focused on tapping wind and solar energy to a great extent and is establishing world's largest solar power plant of 750 MW capacity at Rewa and already set up Asia's biggest solar energy plant of 130 MW capacity at Neemuch.
Yadav also highlighted the state's achievements in infrastructure and social sector especially construction of toilets in nearly 50 lakh houses under Swacch Bharat Mission and making 1,500 villages open defecation free this year.
Republic Day was also celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety in all other district headquarters, including Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain and Gwalior.
