The incident happened when Rao was racing the LGB 4 at Kari Motorway, near here, after finishing the fourth lap, organisers said.
As there was a confusion regarding the movement of safety car, the Bengaluru driver tried to move to the side and in the melee his car flipped thrice and fell on the track side.
Even after the somersault, Rao stepped out of the car, as ambulance and help vehicles rushed to his rescue.
After first aid, he was taken to a private hospital, where he is said to be recovering.
