Radiologist held for conducting sex determination test

A team of Gurgaon District Administration today laid a trap and arrested an owner of a ultrasound diagnostic centre for conducting gender determination tests at Gurdwara Road here, officials said.
The raid was conducted at Bhatia Diagnostic Center, run by Radiologist Rajiv Bhatia, 52, police said, adding, the centre has been sealed.
The accused were arrested on the spot and an FIR has been lodged under PCPNDT Act here.
In the wake of skewed sex ratio of Gurgaon, Deputy Commissioner T L Satyaprakash constituted a team for raiding the ultrasound centers in the district. During the campaign, the team came to know that sex determination tests were being carried out in Bhatia Diagnostic Center, they said.
Accordingly, the team set a trap and asked a pregnant woman to go to the radiologist and request for sex determination test.
The accused radiologist allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 for conducting the test.

The woman went to the center this morning and as soon the accused radiologist conducted the test, he was caught by the team.
An FIR under relevant sections of PCPNDT Act has been registered against the accused.
According to G L Singhal, Project Coordinator with 'Beti Bachao- Beti Padhao' project in CM Cell Chandigarh, Bhatia was convicted earlier also by a lower court in Gurgaon in a 2001 case, against which an appeal was pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh.
This is the second time that he has been caught, for which he can be sentenced for a period of 5 years as per provisions of the Act, he said.
In an effort to improve skewed sex ratio of the district, Satyaprakash implemented section 144 of CrPC making installation of CCTV cameras mandatory at all ultrasound centers in the district.
