According to the Indian Railways (Penalties for Activities Affecting Cleanliness at Railway Premises) Rules 2012, offences like dumping litter, spitting at railway premises, defacing railway property, cooking, bathing, urinating, defecating and feeding animals will attract a fine of Rs 500.

Besides, acts like pasting posters, writing and drawing anything on any railway property will also be under the ambit of the rules notified on November 26.

Station Master or an officer not below the rank of ticket collector, or any other officer authorised by the railway administration will be entitled to collect the fine.

Authorised vendors/hawkers will have to make necessary arrangements in their shops or outlets for proper disposal of waste.

Officials said lack of cleanliness had been a perennial problem for the administration and earlier measures implemented had been of little help.
