The proposed rally by the opposition Congress on January 22 from here against ruling Akali-BJP alliance and on drug issue has been postponed by two days due to forecast of rain, the party said today.
"The Congress rally scheduled for January 22 at Amritsar has now been postponed to January 24 because of the possibility of rains forecast by the Meteorological Department for January 22," a party release said here.
It said, the decision was taken today at a meeting held here by the senior party leaders including rally coordinator Rana Gurjeet Singh, MLAs Ashwani Sekhri, OP Soni, Sukh Sarkaria, Dr Raj Kumar Verka, Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, among others.
"In view of the MeT department's forecast of rain on January 22, there was a general consensus that the rally be postponed to January 24, when the weather forecast it is to be clear," the release further added.
A few days ago, BJP had indefinitely postponed its January 22 rally by party chief Amit Shah in view of announcement of Delhi assembly election dates, a move which had drawn sharp reaction from Congress which said the party had "cancelled its rally and ran away".
Congress Deputy Leader in Lok Sabha and Amritsar MP Amarinder Singh had then said "even though the BJP has cancelled its rally and ran away", his party's rally at Amritsar will be held as scheduled on January 22.
Singh had on Sunday announced that a campaign would be launched from Amritsar on January 22 to take on the ruling Akali-BJP alliance in the state, including on the drug issue.
He had said the Amritsar rally will be the first in a series of rallies to be organised state-wide in the coming months to take on the SAD-BJP government on a host of issues.
