The Madurai Bench of the Madras high court today asked the Puthia Tamizhagam leader K Krishnaswamy to come up with suggestions regarding the relief works for the flood affected areas in Tuticorin district.
Justices V Ramasubramanian and N Kirubakaran asked Krishnaswamy to exactly come up with facts including where all work had not been done properly and where the works needed improvement and where no work had been done at all,and come up with the suggestions to drain the water fast and also take up relief works including providing proper medical help by tomorrow.
Krishnaswamy who appeared in person said no motor had been provided so far to drain water and if at all water had been drained, it had done from one housing colony to the other leading the road roko agitation allover. The motors installed by the officials were non-working motors.
There should be a constructive solution to the water stagnation problem,he said. Similarly the mobile medical units were only on paper and did not serve any purpose. The Judges, who agreed to his view, said there should be permanent medical camp in affected areas.
District Collector M Ravikumar submitted that unprecedented heavy rains lashed the district leading heavy inflow into jungle channels which drained into Upparu odai causing floods. The PWD officials also released 22000 csecs of water from Korampallam tank to recede the flood. He also listed the number of persons evacuated, and affected areas. The PWD had plugged two breaches out of three, and the another breach would be plugged today.
They were in the process of clearing all the channels to ensure free flow of water.
In the Buckle canal which was the only source of draining water into the sea. There was no natural gradient, and it blocked the water. Senior IAS officials were overseeing the relief operations.
