: About 60 members of tribal families in three villages were evacuated and lodged in a school in Thorapalli, near Gudalur in Nilgiris district as water entered their homes following heavy rains lashing the area for the last one week.
Utensils and other household articles were found floating outside the houses in the villages of Thorapalli, Puthurvayal, Thenvayal and surrounding areas, as rain waters remained ankle deep inside the houses, official sources said.
The inmates, including nine children, were evacuated and given shelter in a Government school in Thorapalli, they said.
Power supply was disrupted due to falling of trees in the winds that accompanied the rains, even as the administration has identified 186 dangerous trees and chopped them off, the sources said.
Meanwhile, some students resorted to picketing in Fingerpost on Ooty-Gudalur highway, seeking immediate repairs of the road leading to their polytechnic.
Traffic was disrupted for nearly one hour. The students dispersed after senior district and police officials rushed to the spot and assured them that the matter would be taken up on a war footing.
In Valparai in Coimbatore district, which has also been experiencing moderate to heavy rains for the last one week, water entered about 100 houses, they said.
Some agricultural land and banana farms were found waterlogged, the sources said.
