Rajendran will be replaced by S George who will make a comeback as Chennai Police Commissioner after a hiatus of nearly a year.
Rajendran took charge today after the government permitted Ashok Kumar, the incumbent DGP to voluntarily retire from service effective yesterday.
Rajendran shall be the DGP Intelligence and he "shall hold full additional charge of the post of Director General of Police Tamil Nadu...Head of (State) police force," a Government order by the Home Department said.
Speaking to reporters, Rajendran thanked the State government and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for the opportunity to serve the people.
George, who was Chairman, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board also took over as Commissioner of city police today. He has already served as CoP Chennai for about three years between 2012-14 and 2014-15 before he was transferred last October.
He was appointed ADGP (Law and Order) after the AIADMK came to power in 2011. Rajendran and George were recipients of President's Police Medal.
