A social organisation on Friday took out a rally to the office of the National Register of Citizens here demanding an error-free NRC, while a minority students' body staged protests alleging that minority people were harassed during the recent re-verification.

Holding placards and shouting slogans, the Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, Axom (SNMA) activists marched to the Office of the State Coordinator of NRC alleging that the names of a large number of illegal foreigners had entered the NRC drafts.

SNMA president Chandan Bhattacharya claimed that 3,204 legacy data proving family lineage and Indian citizenship was illegally used by around 69,000 people of doubtful citizenship to get registered in the NRC.

Meanwhile, the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) staged statewide protests against the NRC authorities for sending notices to minority community people in lower Assam to appear for hearing within 48-hours in upper Assam which is around 400 km away.

The Minority Students Union also demanded that the NRC authorities pay an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the next of kin of the two persons killed in two road accidents involving two buses carrying the people who had received notices for re-verification hearing.

It also demanded payment of Rs 5 lakh as ex-gratia to each of the injured.
