A 1992 documentary film based on the Babri Masjid demolition was screened at the Jadavpur University here by the students on Monday, but it was not showed in the Presidency University following alleged objection by the authorities.

"Ram ke Naam", the documentary by Anand Patwardhan, was screened at the JU at the initiative of the students of its film studies department.

"The permission (for screening it) was sought by the department's students some days back and the authorities granted it," JU Registrar Snehamanju Basu told PTI.

Sayantan, one of the students of the department, said the screening started at the auditorium inside the JU campus at around 6:15 and there was no untoward incident.

Some faculty members were also present there, a member of Arts Faculty Students Union said.

In the Presidency University, however, the screening of the same documentary, scheduled for Monday, did not take place following verbal instruction of an official.

The students union of the Presidency University had planned to show it in an auditorium inside the campus.

Students union spokesperson Sayan Chakraborty said there was no further update from the authorities about the screening during the day.

Dean of Students Arun Maity said, "We will confirm if the students had the necessary permission to organise the screening. Presidency had never encroached on the right of students and promoted liberal views."
