A 16-year-old rape victim, who is 26 weeks pregnant, has been denied permission to undergo an abortion by the Rajasthan High Court today.
The court issued the order here after considering the report of a medical board submitted by Additional Advocate General (AAG) Shiv Kumar Vyas which stated that the girl was anaemic and her body was not fit to undergo the termination of pregnancy.
"On Thursday, the report was produced in the court, which stated that the foetus is 26 weeks old and the girl is anaemic. In such a condition, the procedure of termination would be quite risky and may pose a threat to her life," said Vyas.
The girl was allegedly raped by a youth this year and the matter came to light after the girl complained of stomach pain in early June and her parents took her to a doctor.
The girl told them that the boy had raped her and had threatened her not to disclose the matter to anyone. The parents then lodged a police complaint on June 19, following which police arrested the accused.
According to the police, the victim belonged to a poor family and the accused befriended her after hiding his real identity. Taking advantage of her being alone at home, he raped her.
"Not willing to go ahead with the pregnancy, the girl moved a petition in the high court seeking permission for termination of the pregnancy. But considering the health issues, the court refused to give permission," said her counsel Gokulesh Bohra.
He said that the court has now listed the matter for hearing on July 24 to decided on compensation and the situation arising out of the unwanted pregnancy.
