A 55-year-old Omani woman has successfully undergone a rare cervical surgery on her neck at the private KIMS hospital here.
The three-hour-long surgery was successfully completed by a team of surgeons at the hospital.
Salma Abdullah, who had approached the hospital with pain in the neck, shoulder and arms, was diagnosed with cervical disc prolapse, a hospital release said.
Subsequently, a disc replacement was done in which the damaged disc was replaced with an artificial disc, it said.
As conventional surgical methods limit the freedom of movement, forcing the patient to wear a collar, an innovative procedure was done by doctors at KIMS, where no plates and screws were used during the surgery, the release said.
Salma is now able to move her neck and is free of pain and has been discharged from the hospital, it added.
