A rare microsurgery has been successfully performed on a 10-year-old paediatric patient by a team of doctors at a leading institute of cardiac sciences here.
Sources in Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences [RTIICS], a unit of Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospitals, today said that it had set a benchmark in the field of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery by performing a microsurgery without an 'Open Heart Surgery' on the child patient suffering from Pulmonary Arteriovenous Fistula, late last month.
Pulmonary Arteriovenous Fistula is an abnormal connection between an artery and vein in the lungs as a result of which blood passes through the lungs without receiving enough oxygen.
"Pulmonary Arteriovenous Fistulas are generally treated conventionally through open heart surgery. In this case of the patient, suffering from extreme condition of Pulmonary Arteriovenous Fistula, a team of doctors from RTIICS headed by Biswajit Bandhyopadhyay, performed the rare microsurgery (Device Closure) to avoid complications of open heart surgery.
Patients suffering from this show symptoms of bloody sputum, difficulty in breathing, difficulty in exercising, nosebleeds and shortness of breath with exertion.
