Rare surgery performed on four-month-old child

A four-month-old boy, born with a rare disease of having his fingers on the right hand with no extremities, has been operated upon successfully at a private hospital here to enable him move it in a free manner.
With the surgery, the child, who could not raise his hand on his own or with external aid, can now move it freely, a hospital release said today.
"The thumb of the child was almost absent. The remnants of the fingers were joined together. The wrist was also in a distorted condition. On the whole, his right hand was with no form and function," it said.
The hospital authorities said the two-phased surgery, performed on the boy, was successful and the child's right hand has become functional now.
A team of doctors led by Manoj Haridas of the Hand Surgery Department of the hospital performed the rare surgery, the release added.
