Re-planning for law college construction not necessary: HC

The Madras High Court which was of the opinion that re planning for the construction of two Dr Ambedkar Law Colleges is not necessary, directed that one of the senior officers of the Public Works Department to appear before it to explain about the proposed constructions.
The First Bench Comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundresh gave the order considering a batch of pleas filed in support of shifting the college and challenging a Government order for construction of the college have come up today not satisfied with the details submitted by the Director of Legal Studies in its order said "re planning the whole exercise is not needed.
"Onlyfuture planning is a necessity. For this, aplan has to be made as to what is the extent of construction that has to be made. Since the construction itself will take time, it can be done in phases. For this purpose, thepresence of a senior officer from the PWD is necessary to discuss on this issue", the bench said.
The bench directed the State PWD to depute one of its senior officers to appear in court and to hold discussions on the construction of two law colleges, one each in Tiruvallur and Kanchipuram districts.
The matter relates to shifting of the college from the existing esplanade area which is in the High Court Campus as recommended by Justice P.
When the matter came up it was informed by the Director for Legal studies that adequate land was identified at Pattarai Perumbudur village in Tiruvallur district and in Pudupakkam village in Tiruporur taluk in Kanchipuram district.

The budget estimate was fixed at Rs 115 crore for the construction of the two colleges with hostel and other facilities.
It was also submitted that by a communication dated February 18 this year, has requested the PWD to send revised estimates for the works to be carried out in the first instance on the basis of the current rates.
The bench then posted the matter for further hearing to March nine.
