Merging the reel and the real, popular director Raj Chakraborty has turned his gaze on the rape-abuse of village women in a remote Bengal hamlet and the murder of the crusador by the criminal gang.
"Proloy is my tribute to the martyr activist Barun Biswas who dared protest against the abuse of women in Sutia village and was gunned down exactly a year back," Raj said affirming it was not a typical potboiler.
Raj, who remembered having called up script writer friend Padmanabho Dasgupta after reading about Barun's death a year back, said, "I had to bring back Barun on celluloid to show those criminals that they will not say the last word."
"My Barun doesnot meet death on screen. He can't die afterall. This was more important to drive home the message against those commiting crimes like rape and extort common people," the superhit Bojhena Se Bojhena maker said.
The director, who visited the village on July seven to be with the people of the hamlet, said, "A huge crowd thronged the place where we screened trailer of Proloy. Many broke down at the mention of Barun's name who was never afraid of consequences and stood up and inspired other villagers."
Parambrata Chatterjee has essayed the lead role of Barun Biswas in Proloy, produced by Venkatesh films, while Bapi Bari Ja and Bojhena se Bojhena actor Mimi Chakroborty the female lead.
"Param has done an intense job as the forerunner of the flick. Mimi and everybody else has delivered. This is our tribute to people like Barun who remains alive in each of us. The cast's involvement in the story shows in the movie," Raj, who is treading a new path of realistic-popular genre in Bengali films, said.
Proloy, produced by Venkatesh Films, will be released in August.
