The trigger for leadership change demand came when Rane, as a part of the Business Advisory Committee of Legislative Assembly, accepted the newly-introduced norm of allowing the legislators to table a limited number of questions in the House.
The Congress MLAs are upset with the veteran leader for not being up to the mark in taking up the issues raised by the party and for "capitulating" to ruling BJP over the issue.
Though the Congress high command has already deputed All India Congress Committee Secretary A Chellakumar to defuse the crisis, differences continue to simmer in CLP.
"I feel that as a Leader of the Opposition, he (Rane) is shying away from the responsibility. A leader should set an example and I don't think he (Rane) is doing that," Monserratte said before meeting Chellakumar at Dona Paula near Panaji.
