The recorded statements of cash deposits made into the accounts of Sasikala Natarajan, former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's close aide, at a branch of Canara Bank in Chennai was read out today before the Karnataka High Court in the disproportionate assets case.
Justice C R Kumaraswamy, who is hearing Jayalalithaa's appeals challenging her conviction before the special bench formed as per the Supreme Court order, asked Manishankar, Sasikala's counsel, to read the statements pertaining to cash deposits made into her account.
Manishankar read out the recorded statements of cash deposits made into Sasikala's account, which ran into 240 pages.
One of the pieces of evidence against Jayalalithaa, as per the judgment of the trial court, came in the form of 423 unaccounted cash deposits made in the current account of Mylapore branch of Canara Bank, which was in the name of Namadhu MGR, operated by Jaya Publications in which Jayalalithaa and Sasikala were partners.
The Special Bench has been set up after the Supreme Court had on December 18 last directed the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court to constitute it to decide Jayalalithaa's plea within three months.
Meanwhile, K Anbazhagan's writ appeal will come up for hearing tomorrow. The DMK leader is praying that the High Court call for records and set aside the order passed by Justice Anand Byrareddy who declined a plea seeking discontinuation of Bhavani Singh as Special Public Prosecutor in the special bench hearing Jayalalithaa's disproportionate assets case.
Justice Byrareddy had directed Anbazhagan and Karnataka government to approach the Supreme Court for clarification on the issue of procedure of the appointment of the SPP as it was improper for him to interpret its order relating to the bail plea filed by Jayalalithaa.
Justice Byrareddy had also observed that since the Supreme Court in its order on giving bail to Jayalalithaa was silent on the issue of procedure of appointing the SPP, the High Court wouldn't like to interpret the apex court's order.
The special court had held Jayalalithaa and three others guilty of corruption. The court had awarded four years jail term and also slapped a fine of Rs 100 crore on the AIADMK chief. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10 crore each on the three other convicts.
