Released funds to Maha govt to procure VVPAT: Centre to HC
Press Trust of India Mumbai The Centre today told the Bombay High Court that although it has released funds to Maharashtra government to procure the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) devices that can be attached to EVM machines, the state is yet to utilise the money.
The high court was hearing a PIL which sought a direction to the Election Commission of India to use VVPAT in all the 288 seats in the upcoming state assembly elections.
The division bench, headed by Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Mohit Shah, directed the Centre to make this statement in an affidavit and posted the matter for Tuesday.
According to the PIL, EVM machines did not meet all the international standards requirements and was open to hacking. Hence, VVPAT device would provide an opportunity to the voter to verify the vote caste by him.
VVPAT device is attached to EVM and automatically generates the slip that has the name of the candidate and the symbol in favour of whom the voter has caste his vote.
