CPI-M and Congress leaders demanded in Malda a 'full fledged inquiry' into the violence and that the Chief Minister should holds an all-party meeting to discuss the issue. Union Minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, against whom an FIR has been lodged in connection with a case of vandalism at the Murshidabad district magistrate's office last week, demanded immediate arrest of the culprits behind the killing of the sub-inspector. "What worse incident can happen than what happened today?" he said, adding comments by West Bengal ministers on the incident must stop. CPI-M state secretary and Left Front chairman Biman Bose, who was here to campign for the coming by-election to Englishbazar assembly constituency in Malda, said law and order in the state had collapsed and what happened at Garden Reach in Kolkata could happen again in the near future. Echoing him, Leader of the Opposition and CPI-M Politburo member Surya Kanta Mishra alleged there was 'unrest and lawlessnes' everywhere in the state from Darjeeling Hills in the north to the districts in the south. "The situation is worrying ... The Chief Minister should take the views of all parties on the law and order situation in the state," he added.
