An independent US religious commission, whose members were denied visa by India early this year, would release its annual report on the state of religious freedoms in over 30 countries, including India on May 2.
The Congress-mandated report to be released on May 2 details abuses and violations in more than 30 countries that top the US foreign policy agenda, US Commission on International Religious (USCIRF) said in a statement today.
These countries are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Burma, Central African Republic, China, Cuba, Egypt, Eritrea, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
According to USCIRF, the report provides country-specific recommendations to the President, the US State Department, and Congress on ways US policy can promote religious freedom and related human rights in nations it identifies as the world's most severe religious freedom abusers.
In the previous years, USCIRF has been very critical of the status of religious freedom in India.
India has maintained that USCIRF has no locus standi to comment on India's religious freedom given that this is enshrined in its constitution.
It is for this reason that the India has repeatedly denied USCIRF members visa to visit the country for an on-the-spot assessment of religious freedom.
