West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sunil Gupta today forwarded to the Election Commission the reports on alleged derogatory remarks made by CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress leaders after receiving them from Birbhum and Burdwan district magistrates.
The CEO had earlier sought reports from the district magistrates on two different cases based on complaints filed by the state's two major political parties.
"We have received the reports on complaints in both the cases from the DMs of Birbhum and Burdwan and have forwarded them immediately to the Election Commission (EC) for appropriate steps," Joint Chief Electoral Officer Amit Roy Chowdhury said.
Targeting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Anisur Rahman, a former Left Front minister who had earlier also made disparaging remarks against her, said at a rally in Birbhum district on Sunday, "All ministers in West Bengal are lambs. They cannot even marry without her permission."
Birbhum TMC leader Anubrata Mondal at a rally in Burdwan district on the same day had dubbed CPI(M) as "rodents now coming out of their holes".
According to the CPI(M) complaint, Mondal had asked people to "kill" them with poison.
Stating that a number of complaints had already been received by the Commission from different political parties, Assistant Chief Electoral Officer Amitjyoti Bhattacharya said the Commission had a mechanism to scan the violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and take appropriate steps against all cases of violation.
"Process is on to ascertain the merit of complaints we have received," Bhattacharya added.
