Republic day celebrated in Punjab, Haryana

Punjab and Haryana today joined the nation in celebrating the 65th Republic day with hoisting of tri-colour and colourful parades amidst tight security arrangements.
No untoward incident was reported from any part of the region, officials said here.
Contingents of police, Home Guards, NCC and school children, among others, participated in the parades held at several district headquarters in the two states and their joint capital Chandigarh.
The celebrations at most places in the region were held under foggy conditions.
Punjab Governor Shivraj V Patil and Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia unfurled the tri-colour at Patiala and Gurgaon respectively, while Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda took salute at Ludhiana and Nuh respectively.
In Chandigarh, K K Sharma, Adviser to the Administrator, unfurled the tri-colour and took the salute.
The functions to mark the day were organised at other district headquarters in Punjab and Haryana, including at Jalandhar, Patiala, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Moga, Ambala, Gurgaon, Karnal, Rohtak and Hisar.
Tight security arrangements were in place in the two states and Chandigarh that ensured that the Republic Day celebrations passed off peacefully.
