20 tribal children of Meghalaya, rescued from an unauthorised NGO in Tamil Nadu, were handed over to their parents today.
"We have handed over all the 20 children brought from Tamil Nadu to their parents after verifying each and every case," Meghalaya Chief Secretary P Barkos O Wajri told PTI.
The Tamil Nadu Child Welfare Committee earlier brought the children and handed them over to Wajri following a Madras High Court order.
The children hailing from West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts were trafficked to Tamil Nadu and confined at a house in Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu allegedly by an unauthorised NGO.
After someone informed the government, they were rescued in October last year and kept at a government home.
A Division bench comprising of Acting Chief Justice Sathish K Agnihotri and Justice M M Sunderesh, who heard a PIL in this regard, had directed the child welfare committee to produce the children on March 13 before the Meghalaya Chief Secretary who would hand them over to their parents.
The Tamil Nadu Child Welfare Committee and Meghalaya Chief Secretary are expected to file a compliance report to the court after completing the process.
