Respite for Bengal electricity consumers

The West Bengal government has been able to protect the interest of common man of the state atleast from electricity tariff shock.
In the CESC command area of Kolkata and Howrah, the average tariff rise for 2016-17 year will be just four paisa per unit against earlier proposed rise of 38 paisa was allowed over 2015-16 when average tariff was Rs 6.98 per unit.
While, in the state under West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company command area as the tariff remains unchanged at Rs 6.89 per unit.
"In case of CESC, as per previous multi-year tariff order the rise offered was 38 paisa over 2015-16 average tariff of Rs 6.98 paisa per unit. But, we have finally allowed just a hike of four paisa per unit," West Bengal State Electrcity Regulatory Commission chairman R N Sen told PTI.
Acording to sources, WBERC has reviewed the tariff for 2016-17 with extreme caution in wake of West Bengal chief minister's desire to protect the common man from higher power tariff.
The state government is also offering subsidy for all consumers upto 200 units per month when last round of tariff was raised for WBSEDCL consumers.
