"Restrictions on the movement of people have been imposed in some areas of the old city," a police spokesman said.
Police and paramilitary personnel in riot gear have been deployed in strength at sensitive places in the city and major towns to maintain law and order during the separatist- sponsored strike.
Moderate Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq had called for a strike today against extension in the lease of firing range at Tosa Maidan.
While public transport was scarce, private cars, auto- rickshaws and cabs plied normally, they said. The work in courts was also affected as Bar Association has lent support to the strike.
Meanwhile, senior leaders of the Hurriyat including Mirwaiz, Aga Syed Hassan and advocate Shahidul Islam have been put under house arrest while some others have been taken into preventive custody.
