Congress MP and the party's whip in Lok Sabha, Deepinder Singh Hooda, today asked the NDA government to roll back the rail fare hike for suburban trains for daily passengers in Delhi-NCR in the same way as it was done for Mumbai.
Addressing a Congress protest against the rail fare hike ahead of the presentation of the Rail Budget in Parliament tomorrow, Hooda slammed the decision and asked if the government had concern for Mumbai alone.
Assembly elections are due in a few months in Maharashtra and the hike in passenger fares for second-class suburban passengers in Mumbai for travel up to 80-km has been rolled back there.
Hooda said BJP and Shiv Sena MPs from Maharashtra had called on Union Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda and secured the roll-back.
There are a total 19 MPs in Delhi-NCR of which 18 belong to BJP, Hooda said even as he wondered why they were not making any efforts to obtain a roll-back of the fares for similar rail services in the national capital.
Hooda said he would continue with his agitation till a decision was taken to roll-back fares in Delhi-NCR.
He said that NDA government had okayed a hike such as which had never been brought about by UPA government during its 10-year rule. The decisions of the new government are anti-people and based on its "arrogance" at having secured full majority in Parliament, Hooda charged.
Haryana's Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sharda Rathore, meanwhile, said that the silence of BJP MPs on the rail fare hike issue clearly underlined their motives and vowed that Congress would continue to push for a rollback.
