In the wake of several incidents of rhino poaching in Assam, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has decided to visit Kaziranga National Park in the state soon.
The Environment Minister met with Minister of State for Youth and Sports, Sarbananda Sonowal from Assam, today and assured him of support for development and greater integration of North East region.
"Minister sh. Sonowal discussed the situation of one-horned rhinoceros. I assured him of a visit to Kaziranga National Park soon," Javadekar tweeted later.
"Minister sh.Sarbananda Sonowal met me. Assured him of support for development and greater integration of NE region," he said on the micro-blogging website.
The minister's comments come in the backdrop of several cases of rhino poaching in the jungles of Assam as well as Kaziranga National Park this year raising the concerns both of wildlife activists in the country as well as at the international level.
Despite the rising poaching cases, Assam Environment and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain had recently released a 'White Paper on Wildlife Conservation in Assam' and claimed the population of one-horned rhino has grown in the last seven years.
He had claimed the population of one-horned rhinoceros has grown by nearly 27 per cent to 2,544 in Assam during the last seven years on account of conservation measures taken by the government.
