The number of theft and loot cases increased to 13,264 in rail premises in 2013 as compared to 12,147 previous year, Rajya Sabha was informed today.
There were total 9,191 theft cases reported in trains in 2013 as against 8,225 in 2012, Minister of State for Railways Kotla Jaya Surya Prakash Reddy said in a written reply in the Upper House.
The incidents of thefts have also witnessed increase at stations as 3,262 thefts were reported in 2013 as compared to 3,242 in 2012.
Currently, 1,275 trains are escorted by RPF in addition to 2,200 trains escorted by GRP across the country.
An integrated security system consisting electronic surveillance of vulnerable stations through CCTV camera network, access control, anti-sabotage checks has been approved to strengthen surveillance mechanism over 202 sensitive stations.
