Rivers swell in UP

the eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh has sent the alarm bell ringing, forcing people of several villages to seek shelter at safer places.

Ghaghra and Saryu in Gonda and Ayodhya, flowing above the danger mark, have forced villagers of about over a dozen villages to rush to safer places and some 2,000 people have taken shelter on the roadsides, a report from Gonda said.

Flood chowkis in these areas have been alerted.

A central Water Commission report here said Ganga was showing a rising trend from Kanpur to Ballia while Ram Ganga was also rising at Moradabad.

River Sharda at Palia Kalan, Ghaghra at Elgin Bridge, Ayodhya and Turtipar, Rapti at Balrampur were flowing above the danger mark and were rising.

These rivers were flowing just under the danger mark at a number of other places, sources said.

Met office said monsoon has been normal over the state resulting in rain and thundershowers at many places over eastern UP and at a few places over west UP.

Major amount of rainfall recorded in cms are: Aurriya -9, Nazibabad-6, Moth, orai, Kanpur-5 each, Neemsar, Unnao, Allahabad, Dalmau, Karvi, Jhansi, Etawah-4 each, Bah, Mauranipur, Garutha, Maudha, Sandila, Lucknow, Chhibramau, Safipur, Kunda, and Akbarpur-3 each.
