: A Southern Railway employee was killed and another injured when counter weights of a crossover cable fell on them today during maintenance work at nearby West Hill-Elathur section, disrupting train services for over two hours, a railway official said.
Senior Technician P Krishnan (58), succumbed to his injuries at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, while helper T K Vineesh (32), who fell off the ladder is being treated for injuries, PRO of Southern Railway, M K Gopinath said.
The weights fell down as the cable connecting the up and down lines snapped at 10.30 AM.
While the up line was restored for train traffic at 12.25 PM, the down line was ready around 1.00 PM, he said.
As a result, the Mangaluru-Chennai Egmore Express, Mangaluru-Nagercoil Eranad Express and Mangaluru-Kozhikode passenger were detained at Elathur and Quilandi stations for about two hours, Gopinath said.
"Movement of road vehicles at the level crossing gate at West Hill was also affected due to the mishap," he added.
