Road in east Delhi named after Ambedkar

A stretch of road in east Delhi's Patparganj has been named after Dalit icon Dr Bhimaro Ambedkar, a plaque for which was unveiled today, officials said.

Deputy Mayor of BJP-led EDMC, Vipin Bihari Singh has named the street after Ambedkar and East Delhi BJP MP Maheish Girri unveiled it, the civic body said in a statement.

A national memorial to Ambedkar was also inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 26, Alipur Road here, on the eve of his birth anniversary.

Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb, was a jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit movement and campaigned against social discrimination against untouchables, while also supporting the rights of women and labour.

He was born on 14, April 1891 in Mhow in then Central Provinces of British India. He died on December 6, 1956 at the 26, Alipur Road house in Delhi.
