Road mishap: Kin of govt servant get Rs 58.94 L compensation

The family of a 59-year-old man, who died after being hit by a rashly driven bus in 2013, has been awarded compensation of around Rs 59 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.
MACT Presiding Officer Harish Dudani directed United India Insurance Co Ltd, insurer of the offending Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus, to pay Rs 58,94,520 to the family members of Harish Chander Verma, a government servant, who died in the accident here last January.
The tribunal said that testimony of the wife of the deceased and documents placed on record before it prima facie proved the negligence of the bus driver.

"Thus, in view of testimony of PW1 (wife of deceased) and documents on record, the negligence of driver of offending vehicle has been prima facie proved," the tribunal said.
The order came on the plea filed by Verma's family members in which they said that on January 29, 2013 he was driving his scooter and when he reached in front of the Taj Man Singh hotel here, the rashly driven bus hit his two wheeler from behind.
They said that due to the impact of accident, Verma, who was working with the Central Public Works Department, fell down and sustained injuries and was rushed to a hospital but he was declared brought dead.

Contesting the petition, DTC and driver of the vehicle denied that accident took place due to the negligent driving.
The tribunal, however, said that they have not adduced any evidence in order to substantiate their contention.
"The petitioners are thus awarded Rs 58,94,520 with interest at the rate of 7.5 per cent per annum...From the date of filing of petition till its realisation," it said.
