Road mishap victim gets around Rs 12 lakh compensation

A 42-year-old man, who suffered grievous injuries while travelling in a rashly-driven bus here, has been awarded a compensation of around Rs 12 lakh by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT).
MACT Presiding Officer Manish Gupta directed National Insurance Co Ltd, insurer of the offending bus, to pay Rs 11,70,788 to west Delhi resident Mohan Jha, who suffered 88 per cent permanent disability in his right hand in the accident in April, 2007.
"I award a compensation of Rs 11,70,788...In favour of the petitioner (Jha) and against the respondents (firm)," the tribunal said.
According to the petitioner, he suffered injuries in a road accident on April 26, 2007 while he was going from Gurgaon to Najafgarh.
He alleged that the bus, which was being driven rashly hit a tree and due to the impact he sustained grievous injuries on his right hand.
He was taken to a nearby hospital where the doctors told him that he suffered 88 per cent permanent disability in the limb due to the accident.

Jha had claimed a compensation of Rs 10 lakh.
He told the tribunal that he was working with a private company and was earning around Rs 10,000 per month.
The driver of the bus died during the pendency of the case while the owner was proceeded ex-parte.
