While the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner today assured that potholes would be filled up within a week, Guardian Minister Jayant Patil slammed the civic body for its lax attitude to the perennial problem of bad roads during the monsoon.
"The rainfall is providing us with some window for carrying out the repair works...I am sure the situation will improve within a week," Commissioner Sitaram Kunte told PTI.
He however added that occasional showers may hamper the work. Various agencies in charge of roads in Mumbai, including Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), have been facing flak over the pothole-ridden roads.
MCGM is controlled by main opposition Shiv Sena and BJP.
Citizens are blaming private contractors for poor quality of road construction and maintenance. Bombay High Court has taken suo moto (on its own) cognisance of the matter and issued notices to the government and civic bodies, seeking presence of chief secretary, Kunte, and other top state officers in the court on August 13.
Minister Patil today said he will not be reviewing the condition of roads in the city prior to Ganesh festival this year. He said he had been reviewing the condition of roads and subsequent pothole-filling work for the last three years, but no improvement was ever taking place.
