Venugopal in a letter to Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said, "I would like to invite your attention to take immediate steps to withdraw the unfair hike in the vehicle registration charges and fee for the allied services."
The Centre has recently announced a fee hike for driving licences, driving school permission, international driving permits, transfer of vehicle ownership and registration of various categories of vehicles and its renewal.
"The hike is up to six times higher than the existing tariff. Undoubtedly, the decision is quite unreasonable and also a smack on the public, who is already struggling due to the currency crises," the letter said.
"Therefore I would request you to roll back the decision to impose this unfair hike immediately...," Venugopal said.
The government has made two additional categories - endorsement or renewal of authorisation for vehicles carrying hazardous goods has been fixed at Rs 100, and for a learner's licence test fee or repeat test, the public will have to pay Rs 50, a road ministry official said.
