Romania: Authorities kill over 180 street dogs

Officials say 187 street dogs have been killed in the Romanian capital in line with a new law that came into effect after a four-year-old boy died in August after being attacked by canines that roam streets of the capital.
A new law stipulates that dogs which stay more than 14 days without being adopted or sponsored should be killed.
While some 45 dogs were adopted last week, some 1,000 dogs could be euthanized, said Radu Bancescu, a spokesman for the Authority for the Supervision and Protection of Animals.
He said that the dogs which were put down had been housed for more than 100 days in shelters.

Parliament passed a law permitting Bucharest's 64,000 street dogs to be euthanized after boy's death. Previously only sick dogs were euthanized.
