Root vegetables to fetch better price during harvest

With an aim to help the farmers to take proper sowing decision for various root vegetable crops, Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre has carried out econometric analysis of Potato, Beet Root and Carrot, sown during September and October.
The Centre functioning in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, has analysed the prices of potato prevailed during 1991-2014 in Nilgiris Co-operative Marketing Society in Mettupalayam, near here, which showed that good quality potato will fetch around Rs 25 to Rs 27 per kg during November and December.
In Tamil Nadu, potato is grown in the hilly regions of Nilgiris, Dindigul, Krishnagiri and Erode districts and sent to Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem and Vellore and also to other States.
Currently a 75kg bag of beetroot is auctioned at Rs 1800-2600 and the results of analysis of the price behaviour for the last 10 years and traders survey revealed that the price would be around Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kg in November and December.
As far as carrot, the prices will be in the range of Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg, based on the econometric analysis of the past nine years' prices at Mettupalayam, in November and December, as the current price for a bag containing 75 kgs stood at at Rs 2,250 (Yellow Carrot) and Rs 3,000 (Red Carrot).
