Experts of the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) Monday said the Royal Bengal tigress 'Sundari' will continue to stay in Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha's Angul district.

The local people are demanding that the tigress be shifted from Satkosia Wildlife sanctuary alleging that it killed a woman.

The death of the woman of Haribari village on September 12 had triggered protests by local people, who torched the Hatibari Forest beat office and Tikarpara forest range office.

WII researcher Dr Ramesh, after monitoring the situation at Satkosia, said the incident (death of the woman) was unfortunate.

"The tigress cannot be relocated. However, the authorities will ensure that such incidents do not occur again," Ramesh told a local news channel adding that the relocation project is a larger vision.

He said the decision to relocate the tigress from Madhya Pradesh to Odisha was done after a long planning to repopulate Satkosia.

Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police, Angul, Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said the post-mortem of the woman revealed that she died due to an attack by a wild animal.

Though the woman died due to attack by wildlife, there is no confirmation that the killer was Sundari, the SP said.

A DSP level officer was probing the death of the woman, the SP added.

The Odisha government on Friday had said that it has taken up with the Wildlife Institute of India the demand of local people for shifting a Royal Bengal tigress which allegedly killed a woman near Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary in Angul district on Wednesday.

The tigress was brought from Madhya Pradesh's Bandhavgarh National Park to Satkosia and released into wild on August 17.

"We have taken up the matter with the Wildlife Institute of India. We are also waiting for the post-mortem report of the woman. We will abide by the decision of WII. But so far, no decision has been taken to relocate the tigress," Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Bijayshree Routray said.
