Rs 1.17 cr paid in cases of human rights violation in Apr:NHRC

More than Rs 1.17 crore was paid as relief to victims of human rights violations by central and state authorities in April this year on the basis of recommendations made by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
In a statement issued today, the Commission said it received reports of compliance of its recommendations in 44 cases by different public authorities at the Centre and states.
Apart from initiating departmental and criminal proceedings against the guilty public servants, they paid an amount of Rs 1.17 crore as relief to the victims of human rights violations or their next of kin and also submitted a proof of payment as directed by the Commission.

Of the 44 cases, maximum 28 pertained to violation of right to life in the actions or inactions of public authorities in which the Commission made recommendations, the statement said.
10 cases of death in prison had a maximum number of four in Uttar Pradesh followed by two in Andhra Pradesh and one each in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand and Punjab.
Eight cases were of death in police custody with maximum three in Telangana followed by two in UP and one each in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Meghalaya, it said.
Seven cases were of death in police encounter with maximum five in Assam, while two cases were of death in police firing in UP and Gujarat.

One case was of an encounter by Assam Rifles in Manipur which the Union Defence Ministry could not prove to be genuine and eventually complied with the recommendations of the Commission paying Rs five lakh to the victim's family, the statement said.
