: Foreign currency totally worth Rs 1.48 crore have been seized from two people who allegedly tried to smuggle it out of the country, officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said Tuesday.
The two, planned to leave the country for Dubai by two separate flights, have been arrested at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here, a DRI press release said.
The alleged smugglers were carrying 3.5 lakh Saudi Riyals (Rs 74.37 lakh) each by concealing them in false bottoms created in sweet boxes and biscuit boxes kept in the checked-in luggage, it said.
On interrogation, the two said the currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers and that they were well aware that it was illegal to smuggle foreign currency out of the country, it said.
The case was being investigated, it added.
