Over Rs one crore in cash was recovered from an SUV of the Haridwar District Panchyat Chairman and six people have been booked in this connection here, police said today.
Acting on a tip-off from the Chief Minister's Office that huge amount of cash was being carried in the vehicle of Haridwar District Panchyat Chairman Anjum Begum, police stopped two Lucknow-bound SUVs in Fatehganj East area last night.
On search, the cash was recovered from one of the vehicles, police said.
"An FIR was registered against six persons today in this regard and the Income Tax Department has been informed about it," Superintendent of Police (Rural) B K Srivastav said.
Both the SUVs were fitted with red beacon and one of them was in the name of Anjum, who was not in the car when the cash was recovered, he said. The police were probing the matter.
