A proposal for providing suitable compensation to the next of kin of 17 people who died while working in sewer lines since 1993 has been cleared by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, state minister Banwari Lal said here today.

The Minister of State for Public Health and Engineering said that since 1993, 17 died in sewer lines or manholes while opening the blockages there.

"Family members of these 17 people would get a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each, including the paltry compensation given to them earlier," the minister was quoted as saying in an official release.

Describing the move a great step towards acknowledging the sacrifice made by these sewer cleaners, Banwari Lal said, "The sacrifice made by them in serving the society was not honoured for the last 15 years, as only a meagre compensation was paid to their family members earlier."
