The system was initially started in 1973 and completed in 1980 to provide irrigation facility in 2,70,947 hectares of area and meet drinking water needs in districts of Rewari, Jhajjar, Mahendergar and parts of Bhiwani and Rohtak.
While stating this here today, an official spokesman said the rehabilitation project would immensely benefit the people of the area as it would also help in removing regional disparity between South-Western part of state viz-a-viz the remaining part of the state by increasing availability of water and also recharging the ground water.
Thus project will increase irrigation in additional area of 65,027 hectares in the area in addition to requirement of drinking water and filling of ponds.
Furthermore, there would be saving of about Rs 52 crores annually as energy charges, he said.

He said this ambitious project has been approved by the Standing Finance Committee "B" of State Finance Department today and will now be submitted to NABARD to accord its approval for funding.
This project includes rehabilitation of various canals, replacement and repair of old worn out pumping machinery and providing independent feeder lines for supplying uninterrupted power supplies to the system, he said.
This system is basically lift canal system in which about 100 pump houses have been constructed to supply water to higher reaches.
The system is continuously running for the last 35 years during which no major rehabilitation of pumps or motors have been done. This has resulted in reduced efficiency of pumps to about 40-50 per cent, which has further resulted in reduced lifting of discharge, he informed.
