: Puducherry government has earmarked Rs 40 crore for the 2015-16 academic year towards payment of tuition fees for students joining privately managed engineering and medical colleges under government quota, Chief Minister N Rangasamy said here today
He said government was making the fees available each year under the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Educational Assistance scheme. He handed over Rs 12.02 crore out of this amount to managements of the colleges today benefitting 3048 students .
These students come under the second batch of beneficiaries. Already 2,489 students had been covered earlier, with disbursement of Rs 14.52 crores.
Rangasamy said since government was meeting the tuition fees under the scheme, college managements should not insist that students remit the fees at the time of admission.
The managements could collect other fees relating to the courses without including the tuition fees, he said.
A total of 5,537 students have been covered so far with disbursement of Rs 26.54 crore this academic year, he said. Of them 641 were from medical courses and the remaining 4,896 students from engineering courses.
