Recalling Mahatama Gandhi's saying that earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need but not every man's greed, a court here has sentenced a Delhi Police man to one-year in jail for taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 to settle a quarrel between two neighbours.
"The motto of any public service is to serve the people of this country. Instead of that the officer of public service now a days seems to be in a hurry to serve their own family and pocket. As this court recalls Gandhiji had rightly said 'earth provides enough to satisfy to every man's need but not every man's greed'," the court said.
"The convict in this case was a well-placed police official. The government of India is taking care of his salary every month from funds of public exchequer. So, apparently there is no reason to get into the corrupt deals," Special CBI Judge Rajiv Mehra said while sentencing Head Constable Raj Kumar to one-year jail term.
The court also rejected Kumar's plea for leniency on the ground of family responsibility.
"The plea of mercy on the ground that the convict is the only bread-earner and has a housewife and young school and college going children with other family responsibilities is misplaced. The convict should have thought about the same before getting into the corrupt practice", it said.
The CBI case was that on November 26, 2008 there was a quarrel between one Bablu Tiwari and his neighbour Ram Surat.
Kumar, along with one constable took Bablu and his nephew Shiv Kumar to police station Kalyan Puri and demanded a bribe of Rs 5000 from them assuring that no action would be taken against them but if they fail to pay the money, they would be implicated in a criminal case and may also be arrested.
Bablu lodged a complaint with CBI against Kumar who was apprehended in a trap laid by the agency.
