Dacoits looted Rs 8.77 lakh at gunpoint from cattle traders on Chandanpur-Katara road under Bangiriposi police limits in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district today, police said.
The incident occurred when 14 cattle traders of nearby villages were on their way to Angarapada weekly cattle market under Jashipur police station in a SUV to buy cattle.
Six dacoits riding two motorbikes forced them to stop on the way and then snatched away Rs 8.77 lakh in cash and escaped with the money to neighbouring Jharkhand, said Baripada Sub-Divisional Police Officer Dhiren Chandra Nanda.
A case was registered at Bangiriposi police station after an FIR lodged by Debendra Bindhani. The police swung into action soon after the incident and chased the dacoits, but to no avail.
The neighbouring Ghodabandha police station of Jharkhand has being alerted where the dacoits were believed to be hiding, SDPO Nanda added.
