Introducing the Administrators-General (Amendment) Bill, 2011, Minister for Law and Justice Salman Khurshid urged members to pass it without discussion. The bill was then adopted by voice vote.
Khurshid said the bill will help those who do not have resources and cannot move court to get a probate or letters of administration.
"The limit has been raised from time to time over the years. That limit is being raised from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh," he said.
The Administrator-General has powers to grant certificates to the family of one who dies leaving assets up to Rs 10 lakh excluding deposits in saving bank accounts or provident fund without the need to move the court.
To a demand for making the grant of these certificates time-bound, Khurshid said the would write to the state governments.
